FAQs

I want to play football but I’m not sure where to start…

That’s exciting! There’s so many clubs around Australia (and the world!).

I like the idea of playing footy, but tackling seems a bit intense and rough…

That’s a fair feeling. From the outside, tackling can look very rough and unpredictable. In reality, tackling and the physical side of football should be safe for everyone. Tackling is a skill you develop which means you can do it without leaving them hurt. There are also safety techniques you can use when you are being tackled. Making yourself ‘big’ is a technique I like to use - it involves using your arms to soften landing on the ground.

What’s the best football advice you have?

The best advice I have is to try your best and have fun. I love the skilful side of the game too, so I always tell players to keep working on their skills. The more control you have over the ball, the more fun footy is for everyone. Find what you love about the game and keep coming back to that!

Why do you play footy?

I play footy because I love that it challenges me physically and mentally. Since I was little, I always loved that I could yell as loudly as I could and it was a good thing. I felt like there weren’t many other places where I could do that - it was very freeing. I also love that you can use your strength and power. I think football is unique from other sports as you can physically protect your teammates - with a shephard or a block!

WHAT WILL YOU DO ONCE YOU RETIRE?

I think I will do many things once I retire from playing football. I’m open to having involvement in a footy program (maybe coaching or welfare!). I get excited thinking about doing something totally different to footy. At the moment I’m working on building an art practice which is already bringing a lot of happiness to my life. I know that creativity will carry me through life.
